FREEDOM TO CHOOSE

Freedom To Choose is a social campaign created in my Graphic Design II course, dedicated to reframing abortion access as a form of American freedom. It mainly aims to target moderates and people who lean pro-life by using typically conservative wording (such as emphasis on personal freedoms and original American documents such as the constitution) in the context of abortion access. Ideally, people who believe America was founded on the concept of personal freedom who were previously pro-life will recognize that the option to choose for oneself whether you get an abortion is part of that promise of freedom.

Freedom To Choose uses typically American imagery and symbols of freedom, such as The Statue of Liberty, The Liberty Bell, the Founding Fathers, and Uncle Sam to visually relate the concepts of abortion to symbols of liberty. Such imagery is presented through graphic translations, bold color blocking, and the iconic pink bar over the eyes of the subject, which disrupts the otherwise recognizable symbol and suggests a rebellious social message.

POSTERS

Three series of three posters were designed to be displayed on bus-stops, the sides of buildings, or subway stations as a way to introduce people to the campaign through classic American symbols of freedom and liberty. These images are then juxtaposed next to ripped American documents and contradictory quotes from said document. The tagline of the campaign, Abortion is Freedom, boldly ties together the overall message of Freedom To Choose.

The posters focus on calling out the hypocrisy of America’s promise of freedom when viewed through the lens of abortion access and women’s access to healthcare.

POSTCARDS

As a way to create location-specific content, specifically American landmark-specific content, postcards were designed to call out specific American values and the ways those are not held up through current abortion legislation.

These nation-wide locations include the Lincoln Memorial, Mount Rushmore, and the Statue of Liberty, but other possible locations could be George Washington’s statue in the Boston Public Gardens, the Benjamin Franklin Memorial in Philadelphia, or the Unconditional Surrender Statue in Sarasota, Florida.

STICKERS

Freedom To Choose stickers were designed to be sold to supporters of the cause and can be placed on items such as water bottles, laptops, phone cases, etc...

GUERILLA

As a way to directly combat conservative political campaigns, a sticker featuring the iconic pink bar and the words “Abortion Is Freedom” is sold and handed out with the purpose of vandalizing road signs and other conservative advertisements. These signs often spread hateful and dangerous messages, so these stickers would be able to cover those up while leaving the Freedom To Choose message in more conservative neighborhoods.

MERCHANDISE

INSTAGRAM

An instagram page for the campaign ties the messaging together by providing a space to access important abortion statistics, quotes, and messages. These posts also include American imagery and images of protestors with bold color blocking as a way to draw attention and allow supporters to spread crucial information.
